NOMOS GLASHUTTE

Founded in 1990, just two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nomos has in its relatively young corporate life risen to become one of the most popular brands in German watchmaking as well as probably the most accessible to newer collectors. Nomos’s success — which includes an impressive string of German design awards for several of its products — has resulted from a combination of sensible pricing, classical Bauhaus design, and outstanding quality. Over the past several years, the brand has been steadfast in its pursuit of developing in-house movements, both manually wound and mechanical, and equipping more of its timepieces with them, gradually replacing the outsourced Swiss movements that animated their predecessors. Minimalist classics from Nomos’s early days are still among the most popular, such as the Tangente, Orion, and the square-cased Tetra, though the company has also expanded its scope with sportier models like the diving-inspired Ahoi and racing-inspired Autobahn.

History of Nomos Glashütte

Nomos Glashütte was formed by Roland Schwertner in 1990, a mere two months after the fall of the Berlin wall. The company employs over 200 people worldwide and is the largest producer of mechanical timepieces in Germany.

Nomos Glashütte designs its watches in its workshop in Berlin and produces them in Glashütte. Glashütte is a small town south of Berlin, near Dresden in Germany, world-famous for its watches and watchmakers for over 170 years.

Since the first time Nomos Glashütte timepieces hit the market in 1992, they were designed to be unisex. Nomos do not label their models as made exclusively for either men or women, regardless of the size of the case. And all of their timepieces wear great on the wrist.

Since 2005, Nomos develops and produces all its movements in-house. Almost everything is made by the brand, from the bridges to the beveled edges. The brand has a highly recognizable Bauhaus style, originally the design of Susanne Günther
