Andreas Strehler Cocon
Pure elegance
Andreas Strehler needs little introduction to haute horlogerie conoisseurs. Now an established star in the independent watch-making fraternity, Strehler began his journey in 1987 when he began an apprenticeship as a watchmaker in Frauenfield, Switzerland. Learning the art of clock and antique watch restoration, followed by four years as a prototypist at Renaud et Papi (Audemars Piguet), led him to master the essence of fine watch making at a young age.
Known as the Engineer for the Brands, Watchmaker for the Few, he’s been behind some of the most acclaimed tourbillon movements unveiled by mainstream, top manufacturers.
The Prix Gaïa in the category Artisanat-Création, handed to Strehler in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 2013, guaranteed him the status of master watchmaker and carved in stone his outstanding contribution to fine watch-making so far.
The aptly named Cocon ‘pure elegance’ range excels in its pure simplicity and, in our view, embodies the essence of Andreas Strehler production for its intricacy. In terms of pure performance, this hand-winding calibre Cocon features a 78-hour power reserve driven by a double barrel. This system significantly elevates the bearing pressure on the central wheel, which guarantees both smooth winding and even distribution to the two mainsprings. For the technical geeks, this obviously means no wearing in the transmission of power, which translates directly to long durability.
The watch is striking for the beauty and harmony in its form. The finely polished 41mm 18K pink gold case sits beautifully on the wrist and the oval-shaped, off-centre silver and sapphire dial is a surprising yet effective touch. The open dial work to the left of the minute markers is an absolute highlight of craftsmanship and the applied red gold avec-serif markers frame the blue leaf-shaped hands magnificently.
Andreas Strehler’s timepieces have already left a permanent entry in the history of watch-making. We believe this Cocon edition makes the perfect introduction to the master watchmaker’s remarkable production values.
