Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, a yellow gold and stainless steel quartz wristwatch with date, Circa 1987
Beschrijving
Description
The first Royal Oak was created in 1972 and designed by the legendary watchmaker Gerald Genta, who drew inspiration for its shape from a ship's porthole and completed its blueprints overnight. It was introduced as the world's first luxury watch in stainless steel, in an attempt to revitalize traditional watchmaking from the quartz crisis.
With 50 years in production, the Royal Oak has undergone 500 variations. With this in mind, the Royal Oak case remains decorative and practical with an octagonal shape, extreme thinness, water resistance and a hexagonal crown.
The watch is in overall fair condition with moderate wear throughout commensurate with age. The case is in overall fair condition with moderate surface wear. The dial is in overall good condition. Bracelet and buckle are in overall fair condition with heavy scratches throughout, consummate with usage. The movement is running at the time of cataloging, however, it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.
