ANDREAS STREHLER TRANS-AXIAL REMONTOIR TOURBILLON
An exceptional piece of contemporary independent watchmaking from one of the most respected master watchmakers of our time, the Trans-Axial Remontoir Tourbillon by Andreas Strehler is a watch of profound complexity and technical innovation.
As holder of a Guinness World Record for the most precise moon phase ever created, with a deviation of one single day in well over two million years, Andreas Strehler is a watchmaker for whom the pursuit of perfection is a default prerequisite for his own creations. For the Trans-Axial Remontoir Tourbillon, the combined objectives of optimising precision, counter-acting the gravitational effects on the balance, as well as refining the delivery of energy required the ground-up design of a mechanism which features remontoir and tourbillon.
Presented in a cushion-style case of platinum, the watch is elegant in its design, with rounded, off-square bezel and display, lines which flow from lug-end to lug-end, and an absence of straight edges. Measuring 41mm across and 37.3mm end-to-end, it is perfect for all wrist sizes.
Beneath the convex dome of sapphire crystal, the formality of the dial is a skeletonised off-centre silvered ring, with sapphire gear wheels exposing the three dimensional architecture of the movement and of course, the hypnotic animated allure of the technical pièce de resistance which rotates in its own space at the nine o’clock position. The hours and minutes are indicated with blued steel hands, while at the six, the dead-beat seconds hand jumps from marker to marker.
The manual winding movement has a power reserve of 78 hours from the two barrels which are visible underneath the time display, and a small arrow between the nine and the twelve indicates the remaining reserve. The energy is delivered to the balance and escapement at the heart of the tourbillon in a constant force via the remontoir d’égalité, which is coupled with the regulating organ on the same shared axis, and which rotate together every sixty seconds in one second increments.
As technically sophisticated as it is, Strehler is also uncompromising in the standards of true haute horlogerie, and throughout the in-house designed and developed movement, the finishing is intricate and flawless, with polished anglage around the edges of plates which are decorated with a sun ray guilloché. The winding mechanism features conical gears which mesh with the trio of wheels on the underside as they wind the two barrels.
A remarkable piece in every aspect, the Trans-Axial Tourbillon by Andreas Strehler is an individually manufactured connoisseur’s watch which epitomises the extraordinary invention and innovation of a truly great watchmaker.
